Privacy and Dignity: Same-Sex Accommodation

We know that privacy and dignity are extremely important issues for patients and that's why improving same-sex accommodation is such a priority for the NHS in the North West. As part of the Privacy and Dignity project, we will be making sure that same sex accommodation is available throughout the region by April 2010.
We understand that, for some patients, being in hospital can make you feel nervous or vulnerable. So it's clear to us that ensuring everyone who needs a hospital stay will have single-sex accommodation and toilet and washing facilities will go a long way to reassuring patients and improving their overall experience as a patient..
The government has provided £100 million to the NHS across the country to help develop same-sex accommodation.
In the North West, we have received £14.8m to ensure that mixed-sex accommodation is eliminated by April 2010.
The Privacy and Dignity initiative fits in with the new rights and responsibilities enshrined in the NHS Constitution which states that patients and the public have the right to be treated with dignity and respect.
The programme also is an important part of Healthier Horizons - our vision for health and healthcare in the North West and our continued drive for better care for patients.

As part of the NHS Constitution it states that patients and public have the right to be treated with dignity and respect.
