More choice for NHS patients
If your GP refers you to hospital for treatment, the NHS 'Free Choice’ system means that you can now choose to go to any NHS-funded centre, whether this is your local hospital, a specialist NHS centre elsewhere in the UK or a private hospital which provides NHS services.
This change was introduced from April 1, 2008 to give patients more control over where and when they are treated. It is further evidence of a shift towards providing the public with more personalised care.
Considerations that may influence your decision on where to go if
you need hospital treatment, include:
- wanting to be nearer your family to convalesce
- treatment by a particular team specialising in a specific area of care
- the reputation of the hospital
- the convenience of going to your local hospital
The introduction of Free Choice will give that flexibility.
Your GP will be able to help you to make your choice, using accurate and independent information. You can also compare information about hospitals on the NHS Choices website at www.nhs.uk
Once you have been referred by your GP, you can also speak to an advisor by calling 08456 088 888 free of charge. Information is also available from local libraries.
