NHS North West

Research and Development in the North West

NHS North West has high aspirations for Research and Development (R&D) in the North West. Our ambition is that:

  • The North West is perceived to be the place of choice to undertake high quality health research without delays
  • The North West's high quality research strengths are nationally and internationally recognised and acknowledged.
  • The North West has a high calibre R&D workforce and infrastructure to deliver high quality research.
  • NHS North West R&D Team aims to co-create a strategic approach to R&D.

We facilitate NHS organisations and Universities working collaboratively to develop and secure high quality, innovative bids for research funding. We aim to speed up the process of taking research breakthroughs into NHS patient care to improve treatments and patient care locally and for the wider NHS.

R&D is integral to the NHS and Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs) have a duty to promote innovation and we report on the actions taken to support the work of the NIHR Clinical Research Networks locally and to develop the collaborative capacity for the NHS to join in research studies and trials.

The NHS has potential to be a huge strategic asset to expand the life sciences industry and support pharma industry with innovation and the opportunities for:
• Quality
• Innovation
• Productivity
• Prevention
