NHS North West

Health and Migration

The number of people moving out of and into the North West is constantly Two menchanging and the pattern is different from borough to borough but is likely to continue.

Recent arrivals from overseas, both here in the North West and across the country, are diverse and include students, workers, people joining family members, returning British nationals and asylum seekers. They are individuals becoming members of our local communities and have wide-ranging skills, dreams and needs.

Strategic Migration Partnerships have been set up across the country to support local agencies in identifying the needs of these new arrivals, balancing them with those of other community members to ensure equality and social cohesion.

As part of this partnership and in an advisory and development role, the Health Interest Group has linked with NHS, local authority and voluntary organisations in the region and with national migration groups. The group aims to:

  • Assess the impact of migration on health, wellbeing and services in the region.
  • Try to make sure there is equitable provision of health, wellbeing and service delivery in the region.
  • Produce recommendations on research and development needs.
  • Pay particular attention to asylum and refugee health.
  • Raise awareness of related issues and foster sharing of good-practice.
