Wirral is bordered on three sides by coastline and includes 12 sites of special interest and 70 sites of biological significance..

The peninsula remained primarily rural for centuries, until the development of the ship-building industry in the 19th century. The most famous company, Cammell Lairds at Birkenhead, built famous vessels like the Ark Royal, the Birkenhead and the Mauretania.

The most famous of the Wirral’s many villages is Port Sunlight, built between 1899 and 1914 as a model village for the employees of the Lever Brothers’ soap factory, which grew to become Unilever.

Sport buffs are drawn to the world-famous Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake which hosted the Open Championship 2006. Famous Wirral personalities include actress and politician Glenda Jackson, Everest climber Andrew Irvine and poet Wilfred Owen.
