Not many people know that the Trafford area can boast three castles and more than 200 listed buildings. The area underwent change in the late 19th century and the population rapidly expanded with the arrival of the railway.

Trafford is the base for Manchester United F.C, Lancashire County Cricket Club, and Manchester Phoenix ice hockey team. It is also the home of the iconic Imperial War Museum North, designed by Daniel Libeskind.

Shoppers from all over the country flock to the large out-of-town shopping centre, the Trafford Centre.

Trafford Park was founded in 1897, and as well as being the world's first planned industrial estate, it is Europe's largest business park. At its peak in 1945 it employed 75,000 people. It contains the UK’s longest and widest indoor ski slope.

James Joule, the physicist who gave his name to the unit of energy, lived in Sale all his life. Actor Matthew Kelly was born in Urmston.
