Tameside has a strong manufacturing tradition, though since the 80s and 90s service industries have become increasingly important. Denton was the centre of the felt hat industry well into the 20th century and also the headquarters of the lead ozide battery manufacturers Oldham.

The artist L.S. Lowry lived in Mottram and often featured the people of Stalybridge in his paintings. The song It's a Long Way to Tipperary was written in Stalybridge in 1912 after composer Jack Judge was challenged by a friend to write, compose and produce a song in just one night.

Other notable Tamesiders are Freddie Garrity from the band Freddie And The Dreamers, English world cup footballer Sir Geoff Hurst.

Nearby Glossop is historically part of Derbyshire. Unlike Tameside, Glossop is a more rural community, including several satellite villages. The philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein lived in Glossop while studying at Manchester University.

Patient Opinion

We want to hear your story and your ideas to help other patients, and to improve the NHS. Here are some of the things you can do on Patient Opinion:

Patients and carers can find out what other people think of local hospitals, hospices and mental health services

And lots of people share the story of what happened to them or their family when they are ill

Most important of all patients and carers can tell it like it is - patients and carers know what the service Pregnant Woman and child was like and come up with lots of great ideas about how it could be better.

So you can tell people what happened to you, as well as reading what others think.
