Stockport’s skyline is dominated by two structures – the Victorian brick railway viaduct whose 27 arches straddle the town and the striking blue glass Pyramid which houses the call centre of the Cooperative Bank next to the M56.

Originally a rope-making town Stockport went on to become the centre of the hat industry and by 1884 was exporting more than six million hats a year. The town has a Museum of Hatting.

The market in Stockport has been going for nearly 750 years and is reputed to have had a wife sale – the last one was allegedly sold in 1833 for the price of a gallon of beer.

Famous Stopfordians include Fred Perry, three time Wimbledon Champion, Sarah Harding from Girls Aloud, David Dickinson and Dominic Monaghan, best-known for his role in the movie adaptations of "Lord of the Rings”.
