Salford boasts many historic achievements – the world’s first free public library, the world’s first gas-lit street and the birthplace of the modern vegetarian movement.

Coal mining, cotton and textile production once dominated its economy and its phenomenal expansion led to the building of housing soon regarded as among the worst slum housing in Europe. Since then the area has undergone major redevelopment.

LS Lowry – the artist who lived in Pendleton for 40 years and painted the industrial mills and streets around him peopled by ant-like figures – is commemorated in The Lowry art centre. This houses the largest collection of the artist’s work, as well as galleries and theatres.

The quays, that replace the formerly-busy Salford Docks, have been redeveloped and will become home to several departments of the BBC being relocated in 2011.
Famous Salfordians include composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, rock musician Bernard Sumner, actor Sir Ben Kingsley and playwright and director Mike Leigh.

Patient Opinion

We want to hear your story and your ideas to help other patients, and to improve the NHS. Here are some of the things you can do on Patient Opinion:

Patients and carers can find out what other people think of local hospitals, hospices and mental health services

And lots of people share the story of what happened to them or their family when they are ill

Most important of all patients and carers can tell it like it is - patients and carers know what the service Pregnant Woman and child was like and come up with lots of great ideas about how it could be better.

So you can tell people what happened to you, as well as reading what others think.
