Oldham is an ethnically-diverse borough with large Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani communities. It takes in the districts of Chadderton, Crompton, Failsworth, Lees, Royton, Saddleworth and Shaw.

Although the town’s existence can be traced back to the eleventh century, the Industrial Revolution laid the foundations for the borough’s prosperity. At its height Oldham had 360 mills and was the most productive mill town in the world. Its last mill closed in 1998.

Oldham claims to have given birth to the world’s first fish and chip shop in around 1860 and to the tubular bandage a century later.

Composer Sir William Walton was born in Oldham and is commemorated in The Spindles shopping centre as part of one of Europe’s largest stained- glass roofs.

Other notable people with Oldham connections include the world’s first test tube baby Louise Brown and Coronation Street actress Shobna Gulati.
