The city of Manchester has long been an engine of prosperity for the north and the rest of Britain since its Industrial Revolution heyday when it earned the name King Cotton. Nowadays it is known for music and football.

From the Hallé Orchestra 150 years ago to the rise of the 1980s “Madchester” rock scene, the city has been, and continues to be, a musical trend setter. On the pitch, Manchester City battles for attention with its Trafford-based rival Manchester United.

The many different ethnic groups attracted to the city, plus its large student population make Manchester a culturally-ebullient place to live and work.

The Manchester bomb in 1996 caused a wave of redevelopment which transformed the mainly-Victorian city centre. Since then the architectural revolution has continued, including the building of the city’s tallest building – the 48-storey Beetham Tower.

Famous Mancunians include physicist Ernest Rutherford who first split the atom, author Elizabeth Gaskell and suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst.

Patient Opinion

We want to hear your story and your ideas to help other patients, and to improve the NHS. Here are some of the things you can do on Patient Opinion:

Patients and carers can find out what other people think of local hospitals, hospices and mental health services

And lots of people share the story of what happened to them or their family when they are ill

Most important of all patients and carers can tell it like it is - patients and carers know what the service Pregnant Woman and child was like and come up with lots of great ideas about how it could be better.

So you can tell people what happened to you, as well as reading what others think.
