Population: 150,000

Knowsley borough takes in the towns of Kirkby, Huyton, Knowsley, Prescot, Whiston, Halewood and Cronton.

It was once a mixture of rural open space and heavy industry but its last two coal mines – Cronton and Sutton - closed in the 1980s and 1990s. The cable making in Prescot and the clock making businesses, both collapsed.

Now the area’s greatest claim to fame is Knowsley Safari Park – a 550-acre park now inhabited by giraffes, elephants and lions. The poet Edward Lear wrote his poem The Owl And The Pussy Cat at Knowsley Hall and Shakespeare is also said to have performed a play there.

Liverpool and England star Steven Gerrard was born in Knowsley and has been granted the freedom of the borough, giving him the right to drive his sheep down the main street of his home town.

Knowsley is also home to the Jaguar X-type and the Land Rover Freelander, built at the Halewood Operations plant.

Patient Opinion

We want to hear your story and your ideas to help other patients, and to improve the NHS. Here are some of the things you can do on Patient Opinion:

Patients and carers can find out what other people think of local hospitals, hospices and mental health services

And lots of people share the story of what happened to them or their family when they are ill

Most important of all patients and carers can tell it like it is - patients and carers know what the service Pregnant Woman and child was like and come up with lots of great ideas about how it could be better.

So you can tell people what happened to you, as well as reading what others think.
