Rochdale was one of the first industrialised towns, becoming a boomtown for textiles during the industrial revolution.

It is famous around the world as the home of the co-operative movement, with the so-called 'Rochdale Pioneers' opening their famous Co-operative shop on Toad Lane in 1844.

Rochdale Borough is also racially and culturally diverse, and has the youngest population in Greater Manchester in the 0-15 age group.

Outside Middleton is the Langley area – which contains one of the biggest council estates in Europe, built in the 1950s to house thousands of families uprooted by the clearance of Manchester’s slums.

Peter Heywood of Heywood Hall was reputedly the man who snatched the torch from Guy Fawkes as he was about to detonate gunpowder in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament November 5, 1605, thus foiling the Gunpowder Plot.

Famous Rochdalians include singers Gracie Fields and Lisa Stansfield, broadcaster John Peel and actress Anna Friel.
