Population: 495,000

Cumbria was formed from the old counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, and part of North Lancashire, and is now England's second largest county in size. Inside is the Lake District National Park an area some 30 miles across, containing England's highest mountains (four of them more than 3,000 feet high in height), and some of England’s biggest lakes.

The Fells are a draw to lovers of the outdoors and provide the focus for Cumbria’s booming tourist industry, which is taking over as its once-booming sheep farming industry shrinks. Ship building, the nuclear industry, gypsum production and wind power also make up a significant part of Cumbria’s economy today.

Beatrix Potter – the creator of Peter Rabbit and Mrs Tiggiwinkle – is one of many writers and artists who came from, or were inspired by Cumbria, such as William Wordsworth, Swallows and Amazons author Arthur Ransome, painter and philosopher John Ruskin and media personalities Melvyn Bragg and Hunter Davies.

Patient Opinion

We want to hear your story and your ideas to help other patients, and to improve the NHS. Here are some of the things you can do on Patient Opinion:

Patients and carers can find out what other people think of local hospitals, hospices and mental health services

And lots of people share the story of what happened to them or their family when they are ill

Most important of all patients and carers can tell it like it is - patients and carers know what the service Pregnant Woman and child was like and come up with lots of great ideas about how it could be better.

So you can tell people what happened to you, as well as reading what others think.
