Overlooked by Winter Hill, Rivington Pike and the West Pennine Moors, Bolton was in the 19th century one of the world’s most productive centres of cotton manufacture. Now it has swapped textiles for service activities.

The borough includes several smaller townships – such as Horwich, Farnworth, Westoughton and Blackrod.

Lostock is home to one of the country’s biggest makers of military systems and missiles. Locomotives were once built in large numbers in workshops in Horwich.

Today, Bolton is better known nationally for the success of its football team Bolton Wanderers. Few people know that another of the area’s football clubs – Turton FC – plays on the world’s oldest football ground dating back to 1830.

Bolton was voted 'most friendly' community in a recent internet poll, and has a large Asian population as part of its diverse community. Famous Boltonians include the inventor of the Spinning Mule Samuel Crompton and comedian Peter Kay.
