Blackpool is believed to get its name from a long-gone drainage channel which ran over a peat bog.

From the middle of the 18th Century, sea bathing to cure diseases became fashionable, and visitors began making the trek to Blackpool, reaching a height of 17 million per year after the Second World War. This has now declined as people favour holidays in the sun, but the town is now an important conference venue, including for the Conservative Party.

The whole area is heavily dependent on the retail sector – particularly since the decline of the fishing It is also the home of ERNIE the government computer that picks the premium bond winners.
