Population: 140,000

The Beatles put Blackburn on the world map with their line ‘4,000 holes in Blackburn Lancashire’ in their song ‘A day in the Life’.

Blackburn prospered with the industrial revolution because of its perfect climate and geography for cotton weaving, but by 1976 there were there were only 2,100 looms running in the town, down from a high of 79,405 in 1907. Production has now moved to light engineering and electronics.

The 1950s brought people from the Indian sub continent and Eastern European to fill labour shortages in the cotton mills. Today the area has the third highest Asian population in the country.

The area is known in sporting circles for Blackburn Rovers - founding members of the football league. Culturally the area is well known as the birth place of fell walker Alfred Wainwright and contralto Kathleen Ferrier, and the home of fictional character ‘Hetty Wainthrop’.

Patient Opinion

We want to hear your story and your ideas to help other patients, and to improve the NHS. Here are some of the things you can do on Patient Opinion:

Patients and carers can find out what other people think of local hospitals, hospices and mental health services

And lots of people share the story of what happened to them or their family when they are ill

Most important of all patients and carers can tell it like it is - patients and carers know what the service Pregnant Woman and child was like and come up with lots of great ideas about how it could be better.

So you can tell people what happened to you, as well as reading what others think.
