Wigan is one of the largest metropolitan districts in England, based around the two towns of Wigan and Leigh.

Porcelain and clock making were once major contributors to Wigan’s economy after coal mining. The first coal mine was established in 1450 and, at its peak, there were 1,000 pits within five miles of the town centre.

Wigan Pier - a major wharf on the Leeds and Liverpool canal - was made famous by writer George Orwell 'The Road to Wigan Pier' highlighting the poor working and living conditions during the 1930s.

Now the town is more famous for having one of the highest concentrations of pubs and social clubs in the UK and for its famous pie eating contest, now updated to include a vegetarian option.

Wigan is the home of premiership football, Wigan Athletic and Super League rugby Wigan Warriors. One of the most 'Wiganers' is comedian and ukelele player George Formby.

Patient Opinion

We want to hear your story and your ideas to help other patients, and to improve the NHS. Here are some of the things you can do on Patient Opinion:

Patients and carers can find out what other people think of local hospitals, hospices and mental health services

And lots of people share the story of what happened to them or their family when they are ill

Most important of all patients and carers can tell it like it is - patients and carers know what the service Pregnant Woman and child was like and come up with lots of great ideas about how it could be better.

So you can tell people what happened to you, as well as reading what others think.
